The Struggles of the Heart, Mind and Soul â€Å"Desiree’s Baby† is a short story written by Kate Chopin set in 19th century Louisiana prior to the Civil war at a time of white dominance, racial tension and slavery. Chopin was born in February, 1850, â€Å"her father was an Irish immigrant and her mother creole† – she lived in New Orleans, Louisiana in the small town of Coulterville which provided her with a living knowledge and information to write the story (Cruz 430). â€Å"Desiree’s Baby† is about Armand Aubigny, a noble slave owner of the southern Louisiana plantation L’Abri, confronted with a deeply rooted family secret that had been hidden from him and the community since birth. The secret threatened the purity of his family name, significant social consequences if unveiled, and was strictly forbidden in the antebellum period of Louisiana. This secret is revealed at the end of the story when Armand discovers an old letter written by his biological mother to his father. The significance of the letter brings a completely different twist to the story and its interpretation. Armand the protagonist in the story, falls in love with a nameless woman that was left on the doorstep of a neighboring plantation (Valmonde) as a child. The nameless woman is given the name Desiree, who grows into a â€Å"beautiful and gentle, affectionate and sincere – the idol of Valmonde† woman (Chopin). First of all, most southerners viewed slavery as the basis of all great civilizations, such ase ancient greece and Rome, and Africains as racially inferior and suited to labor. They thought of themeselvs as paternal (my negroes, my people.) The Southern male was a patriarchal figure of whome the child and his mother owed absolute respect.
