Pepper and Water Science Magic Trick
The pepper and water science trick is one of the easiest magic tricks you can perform. Heres how to do the trick and an explanation of how it works. Necessary Materials You only need a few common kitchen ingredients to perform this science magic trick. black pepperwaterdishwashing liquidplate or bowl Steps to Performing the Trick Pour water into a plate or bowl.Shake some pepper onto the waters surface.Dip your finger into the pepper and water (Nothing much will happen).However, if you put a drop of dishwashing liquid on your finger and then dip it into the pepper and water the pepper will rush to the outer edges of the dish. If you are doing this as a trick then you might have one finger that is clean and another finger that you dipped in detergent before performing the trick. You could use a spoon or chopstick if you dont want a soapy finger. Heres How the Trick Works When you add detergent to water the surface tension of the water is lowered. Water normally bulges up a bit, like what you see when you look at a water drop. When the ââ¬â¹surface tension is lowered, the water wants to spread out. As the water flattens on the dish, the pepper that is floating on top of the water is carried to the outer edge of the plate as if by magic. Exploring Surface Tension With Detergent What happens if you mix detergent into the water and then shake pepper onto it? The pepper sinks to the bottom of the plate because the surface tension of the water is too low to hold up the particles. The high surface tension of water is why spiders and some insects can walk on water. If you added a drop of detergent to the water, they would sink, too. Floating Needle Trick A related science-based trick is the floating needle trick. You can float a needle (or paperclip) on water because the surface tension is high enough to hold it up. If the needle gets completely wet, it will sink immediately. Running the needle across your skin first will coat it with a thin layer of oil, helping it to float. Another option is to set the needle on a floating bit of tissue paper. The paper will become hydrated and sink, leaving a floating needle. Touching the water with a finger dipped in detergent will cause the metal to sink. Quarters in a Glass of Water Another way to demonstrate the high surface tension of water is to see how many quarters or other coins you can add to a full glass of water before it overflows. As you add coins, the surface of the water will become convexà before finally overflowing. How many coins can you add? This depends on how you add them. Slowly sliding the coins into the water edge-on will improve your results. If youre competing with a friend, you can sabotage his efforts by coating his coins with soap.

This is obvious since she came to see him through wind and rain. The Duke on the other hand believed that the Duchess should respect him more than others because of his nine-hundred-year-old-name and describes how any man could not have passed without/much the same smile he himself received from the Duchess. This pretentious assumption that because of his class he should be admired far more than anyone, displays his arrogance and self-importance. The relationships in the two poems are very different: The Duke and the Duchess were only married because of his status and shallowness but Porphyria and her lover appear to be deeply in love with each other. Both poems involve murders that are key to the story. The women are however killed in different ways and for different reasons that help to explain the personalities of the Duke and Porphyrias lover. Tragedy is best felt when an innocent person kills himself while not knowing the truth. The best example of that would be the play Othello by the great William Shakespeare. As little as a handkerchief could make a difference if it is a symbol for something. In the play Othello by Shakespeare, handkerchief is first introduced by Othello to his beautiful mistress, Desdemona, as a sign of their love. At the end of the play what gets Othello to take extreme measures by the location of the handkerchief. As the symbol of the handkerchief transforms from a strong symbol of love to a gift then to factor of suspicious and evidence. As the play goes to the bond between Othello and Desdemona gets stronger. In order to represent that bond Othello gives Desdemona, his motherââ¬â¢s handkerchief as a symbol of their love. Desdemona keeps handkerchief and cares about it. General Prologue: Human Dishonesty, Stupidity and Essay VirtueIn the General Prologue, Chaucer presents an array of characters fromthe 1400s in order to paint portraits of human dishonesty and stupidity as wellas virtue. Out of these twenty-nine character portraits three of them areespecially interesting because they deal with charity. Charity during the1400s, was a virtue of both religious and human traits. One character, theParson, exemplifies Chaucers idea of charity, and two characters, Prioress, andFriar, to satirize the idea of charity and show that they are using charity foreither devious reasons or out of convention or habit. According to the definition from the Websters dictionary, charity meansgiving to the needy and helping the poor. In Chaucers time, however, charitymeant much more. It included a love of G-d and doing the will of G-d as well asthe kind of person one is. Thus Charity had two parts, one human, the otherdivine. Two parts that mixed in different portions depending on a person. Charity was a human virtue that the Church encouraged. People believed that ifone does something good, he will be rewarded by G-d. Many people did meaningful,charitable things out the goodness of their hearts, but others had done it forother reasons. Those reasons included making money from peoples suffering andgiving to charity because someone told them to do so, rather than from thegoodness of their hearts or to ease the suffering of others. Chaucer plays offboth of these parts of charity in his portraits to show how they can be combineddifferently in different people and to distinguish true charity from falsecharity. Parson exemplifies Chaucers idea of true charity. Even though Parsondoes not have any money, he considers himself rich spiritually. Going aroundthe village, he teaches the poor and those who cant go to church about what G-dis and how to be a religious person. He gives more than he receives. In fact,he avoids preaching to the rich and well-to-do because he prefers going to thehumble and poor, who truly need his help and G-d. He doesnt run to London toearn easy breadBy singing masses for the wealthy dead,Or find some Brotherhood and get enrolled. He stayed at home and watched over his foldSo that no wolf should make the sheep miscarry. (p.16)Parson is seen as an ideal priest, and his actions describe the real meaning ofwhat charity is. He is virtuous, Never contemptuous toward sinners, neverdisdainful, and discreet.(p.17) Getting people to Heaven is his main goal,not their money or his own advancement. Friar, on the other hand, uses charity for devious purposes. By gettinga license from the Pope, which lets him go around the country and hearconfessions, he uses this license to make money for himself. Also he runs anagency in which he fixes up young women with men for a fee. Unlike Parson, whogoes out of his way to help the poor, the Friar thinks thatnothing good can comeOf commerce with such slum-and-gutter dwellers,But only with the rich and victual-sellers. (p.9)By visiting only rich people, Friars primary purpose is to make money and notto give forgiveness for the sins as he is supposed to do. He is using hisposition for his own purposes under the disguise of charity, which in his caseis being greedy and being guilty of committing one of the seven sins. Without knowing it, Prioress uses charity as a convention. Since herfather does not have enough for a dowry, he is forced to send Prioress to anunnery. Prioress does not have much of a choice herself, since in the MiddleAges, women had little choice in their future, usually being married or becomingprostitutes. Because she grew up in a wealthy, not very religious family, shedoes not know the real meaning of being a nun and of what charity means beyondwhat the Church has told her. Many organizations have placed greater importance on a service-orientated approach to their business activities. This customer service focus has resulted in an emphasis on being a team player. This in turn has led to the development of intrapreneurial competing teams within a company. Teams can function as small businesses within the organization. ORGANIZATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS THAT ENCOURAGE INTRAPRENEURSHIP The key to establishing an intrapreneur-friendly organization is to create an innovative working environment. There are hierarchies, rules, procedures and the right way to do things to make the company more efficient. Careers can be destroyed by monetary losses and mistakes. Innovation is difficult under those conditions. Other keys to creating an intrapreneurial environment include the following: * Support from ownership and top management; * Recognition that intrapreneurship is compatible to the existing culture; * Communication channels that are open; * Allocation of resources to the new innovations; * Rewards for intrapreneurship; and, * Follow through by the intrapreneurs in order to see the finished product. While these are noble goals, do most organizations allow for these? Three fundamental blocks to the above goals in organizations are the following: * Believing you already have the right answer (This prevents you from understanding possible alternative futures and choosing to create the one you most desire. They are: * Do any job needed to make your project work regardless of your job description; * Share credit wisely; * Remember, it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission; * Come to work each day willing to be fired; * Ask for ad vice before asking for resources; * Follow your intuition about people; build a team of the best; * Build a quiet coalition for your idea; early publicity triggers the corporate immune system; * Never bet on a race unless you are running in it; Be true to your goals, but realistic about ways to achieve them; THE PRACTICE OF THE ART OF INTRAPRENEURSHIP Kawasaki (2006) presented a more realistic set of commandments for the modern day intrapreneur. Intrapreneurial employees are typically energetic and enthusiastic, imaginative and inventive. Most likely, they already have ideas for creating new products or services. Perhaps theyre even working on developing their ideas in their off-work hours. So why not provide them the encouragement, resources and manpower? If you dont, they may move on to another company, or they may start their own and become one of your competitors ââ¬â taking customers and business away from you! When you look at the scope of your day, how much time and energy do you have left over to devote to creating new products and services that could help your company grow? The likely answer is, very little. As the old saying goes, two brains are better than one. So, wouldnt it make sense to utilize all of the brain power that you are already paying for? Yes, fostering intrapreneurial employees means taking chances, but these chances can pay off big. In fact, the Ford Mustang, IBMs personal computer and Kenner Toys Star Wars line were all forged by intrapreneurs working for other people. Another example of the value of intrapreneurship is the genesis of Post-It Notesà ¬Ã ®. In 1974, a 3M Corporation employee couldnt keep his hymns marked properly in his church choir book. After attempting various methods, he decided hed try using some non-permanent adhesive that was available at his workplace. By placing this adhesive on the back of his markers, he found he could keep them secured in place and then easily peel them off when he was done. The man took his new discovery to the management at 3M, a company that encourages employees to spend no less than 15 percent of their time at work developing their own ideas and projects. With the companys support, the resourceful man researched and developed a new product. Twenty-five years later, Post-It Notesà ¬Ã ® continue to be one of 3Ms top-grossing products. You dont have to own a large corporation to foster intrapreneurship. All you need is the ability to encourage employees to develop new ideas, and then give them the time, space and resources needed to turn those ideas into reality. You may think you already encourage your employees to be innovative, but the question is, do you do it in a formal way? The following questions can help you determine whether you are indeed currently fostering an intrapreneurial environment at your company: CONCLUSION Intrapreneurship is a strategy for stimulating innovation by making better use of entrepreneurial talent.
